October 5, 2023 – The Symphony of the Hills presents the first concert in the 2023-24 season, Salute to Schreiner: 100 Years of Pomp and Passion, on Thursday, October 5, 2023, at 7 pm in the Cailloux Theater.
Schreiner University’s Centennial year is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the Symphony’s association with Kerrville’s esteemed institution of higher learning. We will perform one of the most famous pieces heard at school graduations–the trio section of Sir Edward Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance Military March No. 1. We will also premier Everyone Sang, a commissioned work for soprano and orchestra by internationally known composer Donald Grantham, guest conducted by Jerry Junkin. Haley Dove Montoya will perform the soprano solo featuring Siegfried Sassoon’s poem of the same name that is enshrined on a wall at The Hague.
The final work on this celebratory program is the passionate cello concerto of Eduard Lalo, performed by symphony principal cellist, Qizhen Liu. Dr. Liu has strong academic credentials, including a doctorate in music from Yale University.
