About Playhouse 2000

In just 20 years, Playhouse 2000 has become a driving force in the Arts and Entertainment scene in Kerrville and the surrounding Hill Country. Founded in 1998, Playhouse 2000 is responsible for 53,000 guests each year seeing local, national and international performing groups. We are supported by hundreds of volunteers who contribute thousands of hours to create and enhance the arts for our community. Playhouse 2000 proudly manages the Kathleen C. Cailloux City Center for the Performing Arts, including the 800 seat Cailloux Theater and intimate VK Garage Theater.

For hundreds of volunteers and thousands of audience members each year, Playhouse 2000’s season of plays and musicals provides experiences in the theater arts that expand horizons, develop wider social understanding, and offer an escape from the every-day world. This state- and national-award winning program has been an important part of the Kerrville arts scene for twenty years.

The Cailloux Performances Series is the largest program presenting touring performing arts in the Hill Country, bringing the world’s spectrum of arts and entertainment to local audiences at reasonable prices. The Performances Series has grown to include “Six Shows in Six Months” and is established as an asset to the community.

Professional promoters of some of America’s most important touring artists know and love the Cailloux Theater for its warm welcome, its wonderful acoustics, and for its ability to support world-class performances with sound, light, ticketing and more. These promoters bring acts to Kerrville that would not otherwise find a home in the Hill Country.

With the help of funding from the community, Playhouse 2000 is proud to offer three outstanding events each year in our “Young People’s Performances Series.”  These are unique opportunities for children to experience outstanding arts events at absolutely no charge to them or their schools. The program serves many public should districts, plus area private schools and even home schooled children.

As the finest performance hall for miles around, The Cailloux Theater provides a home for arts organizations and performing ensembles who value its impressive impact and outstanding performance support. Their additions to the arts calendar widen the impact of The Cailloux on its community, and enhance the quality of life in the region

Across the country, annual presentations of the works of William Shakespeare take place in theaters and parks to the delight of millions. Playhouse 2000 and The City of Kerrville bring this event to the newly renovated stage at Louise Hays Park and offers it free to one and all, enriching the variety of things to do in the Hill Country, and thrilling hundreds of people beneath the nighttime sky.

Throughout the year, Playhouse 2000 works to schedule, contract and promote concerts by independent touring artists whose appearances enliven the local arts and entertainment scene. These events, made possible by our excellent reputation for offering outstanding performance support, bring outstanding artists to Kerrville so that Hill Country residents can stay close to home.

Every year, more than 20,000 people visit The Cailloux City Center without buying a ticket. Free-to-the-public activities include hosting concerts by KISD school ensembles and military bands; serving as site for Memorial Day and Veterans’ events; political debates, library reading club events, and more; and acting as a polling place for City, County, State and National elections.

A wonderful community like Kerrville has many things that make it great. People who visit will find many reasons to fall in love with our little corner of the Hill Country: fabulous vistas, outstanding outdoor activities, a highly respected University, excellent health care services; the list is long.

Among the “quality of life” aspects we all enjoy, a thriving arts scene is one of the highlights. Very few communities the size of Kerrville can boast a fine-arts complex on the scale and with the quality of the Kathleen C. Cailloux City Center for the Performing Arts. This is important to visitors, and the City Center sees nearly half of its ticket sales go to people visiting from outside of the local Zip Code.

It is also important to local residents, and those considering becoming local residents. The University and Health Care system mentioned above rely on the ability to show off a welcoming, exciting community as they seek to recruit the best possible additions to their staffs. And, with an economic impact estimated to exceed a million dollars per year, The City Center is a major contributor to the health of our local merchants as well.

Like managers of performing arts centers around the country, Playhouse 2000 is a non-profit corporation that owes its existence to the support of the local community. In an average year, after ticket sales, hall rentals and moderate support from The City of Kerrville, nearly a quarter of P2K’s annual operating budget comes through the generosity of individuals, businesses and foundations who believe that a healthy arts scene is important.
