April 30 – May 16 – Playhouse 2000 presents Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, by Aaron Sorkin, April 30 – May 16, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Sunday, May 9 and 16 at 2:30 pm in the VK Garage Theater.
Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, adapted for the stage by Aaron Sorkin, is a dramatic retelling of Harper Lee’s classic novel set in 1930s Alabama during the Great Depression. The story is told largely through the eyes of young Scout Finch, whose father, attorney Atticus Finch, agrees to defend Tom Robinson, a Black man falsely accused of assaulting a white woman.
As the trial unfolds, Scout, her brother Jem, and their friend Dill witness the prejudice and injustice that shape their community. Through Atticus’s example, they learn lessons about courage, empathy, and standing up for what is right, even when facing overwhelming opposition.
Blending historical fact with modern language, humor, and theatrical self-awareness, the play explores feminism, friendship, activism, and the power of storytelling. As the women face the looming threat of the guillotine, they challenge one another’s beliefs and confront what legacy they hope to leave behind. Despite its serious themes, the play is witty, fast-paced, and ultimately celebrates the resilience and courage of women whose voices have often been overlooked by history.
