February 5-21 – Playhouse 2000 presents the 2027 Playhouse NOW production, Laura Gunderson’s The Revolutionists, February 5-21, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Sundays, Feb 14 and 21 at 2:30 pm in the VK Garage Theater.
The Revolutionists is a dark comedy by Lauren Gunderson set during the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror in 1793. The play imagines conversations among four women: playwright Olympe de Gouges, assassin Charlotte Corday, former queen Marie Antoinette, and Haitian revolutionary Marianne Angelle. Together, they grapple with questions of justice, freedom, violence, art, and how individuals can create meaningful change in a turbulent world.
Blending historical fact with modern language, humor, and theatrical self-awareness, the play explores feminism, friendship, activism, and the power of storytelling. As the women face the looming threat of the guillotine, they challenge one another’s beliefs and confront what legacy they hope to leave behind. Despite its serious themes, the play is witty, fast-paced, and ultimately celebrates the resilience and courage of women whose voices have often been overlooked by history.
